E. Evidence and Commentary of Classroom Practices

Image
E.1 Academic Language I created this list to print and display in my classroom. Each box represents a standard size printed page: There are lots of terms that we use in math class that we don’t hear anywhere else, such as x-intercept. There are other terms that we use in math class that have a different meaning than if you were to hear them outside of math class, such as domain. Students that have never learned the mathematical context of these vocabulary words will need instruction to help them understand the meanings and start to incorporate them in their own communication. In order to aid in the instruction of academic language, I print the new vocabulary and display it in the classroom. This helps student learning of academic language because they can see the new word in addition to hearing the word . With practice students will be able to use the new vocabulary themselves, in verbal and written form.  In the future I might include less vocabulary terms . Students are sup...

D. Professional Growth Reflection and Growth Plan

D.1 My Growth As A Teacher I used to believe that being a math teacher involved showing others how to solve math problems and perhaps pointing out connections that I’ve discovered that connect math concepts. Through my teaching experiences and training at Western Governors University, I’ve come to learn that there is a lot more involved to help students master new mathematics skills. Not only must I have a firm grasp on my content, I must be able to accommodate and adjust according to the ever-varying needs of all students. As a teacher, I have found that the majority of students need much more support than simply listening to a lecture in order to master mathematics concepts. They need practice, feedback, then more practice. After a weekend or long break, reminders!  Before our trigonometry unit, the Secondary Math III teachers in our department gave a pre-assessment. We later met and considered what questions the students answered correctly and what questions the stude...

B. Educational Beliefs and Practices Reflection

B.1 Why Teaching is Important to Me Teaching is important to me because I find joy in helping others come to grasp what I know and understand . I can see patterns and I can explain them in simple terms. I understand how numbers work together and I can help others recognize numerical relationships. Many people have told me that I explain things so clearly that they finally understand after having talked to me. Teaching is important to me because it is the vehicle by which I can use my talents to help others learn and grow. Education is critical to have a well functioning country and community. Education, in my opinion, is the key to conquering poverty and ensuring personal and familial success. B.2 My Beliefs About Teaching and Learning At my most recent job interview, the math department chair asked me if anyone could learn math. I said, “Yes, as long as they want to.” Thanks in part to my answer I was given two classes that have a high number of students with IEPs. Regar...
